Things Fall Apart Question 9

What were the consequences to the village as a result of giving the missionaries land in the evil forest?

The consequences were that people started moving over to the Christian side because the wrath of the old spirits did not affect the missionaries. The missionaries have more places to move and they have a place that is secluded from the other areas so people can sneak to it. The missionaries got more land. The missionaries are continually proving the Ibo culture wrong and that they did not get any retribution from the gods of Ibo culture. That makes the missionaries seem strong and more powerful. The missionaries allow for twins and they accept women and they do not see them as evil. They are overall, more accepting.

What are the cultural gains to the Christians and losses to the Ibo because of the decision to locate the church in the forest?

The consequences were that people started believing that the Christians will not be harmed and that it was okay to join their sides because the missionaries had not been harmed. They gained more followers and the Ibo culture lost more believers and people believing in their gods. Ibo lost validity and they seem very rigid compared to Christianity. The Christians encouraged the outcasts and people wanted to talk about them so it was kind of like free publicity.
